The decoration on this teapot is not applied. It is revealed.
Handcrafted by the Horyu (宝龍) kiln in Tokoname, this kyusu begins with kokudei clay the same iron-rich material used for Tokoname's celebrated red shudei.
Through a specialised reduction firing process, the clay develops a deep, uniform black finish. The distinctive pattern across the body is created by carefully cutting into that blackened surface. Each facet exposes the brilliant vermillion-red clay beneath, revealing a striking contrast born from a single piece of clay.
No paint. No glaze. No added decoration. Only the precision of the artisan's hand.
The result is a teapot of remarkable depth and character, where craftsmanship is expressed through technique rather than ornament.
An integrated Ceramesh ceramic filter ensures a smooth, reliable pour without metallic contact, preserving the purity of the tea's flavour. With a capacity of 320ml, it is equally suited to everyday brewing and special tea moments.
